H-12 Hannah Lou’s Hearts. Hand appliqued. Nine pieces. After my post about choosing Variation 1 from the CD, instead of making four heart shapes, I felt committed to making it that way. This was the most challenging block yet for me, even though it came together well, without any major problems. There are no rules, and many ways to make this block, but these steps helped me to piece it without grief:
- start with a 6″ square of background, then fold in half on diagonals as a guide for the teardrop placement
- mark tiny pencil dots on the background fabric at the points where the teardrops meet (at edges, and towards the center of the block)
- use freezer paper on top method, then finger press gently and completely, followed by basting around the folded under seam allowance. pin in place on background with applique pins
- use a number 11 straw needle for the applique
- applique one heart shape, then the opposite heart shape, THEN fit in the remaining hearts at the sides. with this method, I was able to get all parts to touch pretty well

I’m halfway through my second attempt with this block. I just couldn’t keep my sanity AND do the nine-piece method. My second attempt now with four hearts isn’t going so well, either, but I haven’t invested in the applique pins or thinner needles. I plan to soldier on and post what comes of today’s efforts and just put the finished object in the re-do pile. I can’t learn this except by doing it, right?
