Tanabata at Meiji Shrine.  Wishes are written on the papers.

In order to survive the rainy season in Japan, I am convinced that one must embrace it.  The rainy season could have a lot of rather unpleasant associations (like mold, which I did not want to mention, but there, I just said it), but I prefer to think about the hydrangeas and then Tanabata.  The festival involves an ancient story, paper cutting, and decorations.  Oh, and it also means that the rainy season might be over soon.

Will definitely need to wish upon a star for that.

The girls look so, so sweet!
Mold…the scourge of Molly’s existence in Japan. Say no more.

Jennifer, I’m so glad to see a post on Tanabata. I was too busy to take any photos but I wanted to. I am so glad to see another crafty blogger in Tokyo. And you sew and quilt – I may need to ask you for some lessons!
Thanks for visiting my blog. I am sure I will be dropping in to check on you often!

P.S. I think we frequent some of the same crafting stores!

I hope this rainy season found you relatively mold-less. We’re almost home free for this season!

Hi! Your babies are soo sweet! You all really struck a chord in me talking about summer and “the smell”. The rain and mold in Tokyo in Summer are fierce, but it is my favorite season in the whole world. No other culture has done so much to make hot and wet weather bearable and fun. Cold sweet kuzu, hiyashi chuka, wind bells, summer festivals, watermelon, ….I could go on and on. We live here in Long Island, NY, which has weather very similar to Tokyo summers. In fact, it has just this week gotten dry and the cicadas are starting to make noise.I bought a boxed set for shaved-ice last week and I think it’s time to unpack it…….Happy Summer!!!
